Himeji Castle

 Next

Himeji Castle, which presides majestically over the small whistle-stop town of the same name, was originally built in 1346 by Akamatsu Sadanori as a fortification against local shoguns.  It was under the control of various emperors and shoguns, assuming its present day form in about 1610. Some historians believe over 25 MM man days were spent constructing the castle.

The insides of the castle were equally impressive, sparsely appointed with beautiful hardwood floors, doors, fixtures, walls, and stairwells.  Much like a visit to European castles, it served as a reminder that people used to be much smaller than they are today (particularly Japanese people).
