There are many temples, both big and
small, in and around Beijing. We spent time at two of the largest
and most important temples in the city.
The Lama Temple is the center for Lamaist
religion and art. It was originally a residence for Prince Yong,
it was turned into a monastery in 1723 and now houses 70 monks.
However, the current Dalai Lama is still condemned by Beijing and
therefore he cannot visit the Monastary.
The Temple of Heaven was used for
imperial sacrifices twice a year - in the winter solstice to thank the
gods for the harvest and on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar
year (Latern Festival) when he begged the gods to bless the coming
harvest.
