Ah, the sights, sounds, and smells of Kyoto .  The city also featured an interesting, very large, arcaded open-air market running through the heart of town.  For the New Yorkers in the crowd, picture Fifth and Madison Avenues and every cross street between the 42nd St. Library and Tiffany’s, covered with stained glass ceilings, and you get a good idea of the scale of it.

The market had several hundred vendors, each with a roughly 10x10 booth, with their goods on display.  Most of the market was full of food vendors – you can only imagine the smell emanating from the numerous seafood booths – although there were other items as well.
