Ah, the sights, sounds, and smells of Kyoto .  The city also featured an interesting, very large, arcaded open-air market running through the heart of town.  For the New Yorkers in the crowd, picture Fifth and Madison Avenues and every cross street between the 42^nd St. Library and Tiffany’s, covered with stained glass ceilings, and you get a good idea of the scale of it.  

The market had several hundred vendors, each with a roughly 10x10 booth, with their goods on display.  Most of the market was full of food vendors – you can only imagine the smell emanating from the numerous seafood booths – although there were other items as well.
