This is the entrance to the Nijo-jo, the main castle in Kyoto built in 1603 to house the Tokugawa Shogunate.  While, as you can see here from the main entrance, the castle had fairly modest exterior defenses, the interior was configured a bit like a rabbit’s warren, with hidden rooms, trap doors, and deliberately squeaky, “intruder proof” floor boards.
